SSC JE Civil Syllabus & Preparation Strategy (2026)
Complete SSC JE (Civil) syllabus, exam pattern, marks distribution and a month-by-month preparation strategy from Civil Edge Coaching, Roorkee & Dehradun.
The SSC Junior Engineer (Civil) exam is one of the most rewarding government jobs for civil engineering diploma and degree holders. At Civil Edge Coaching in Roorkee & Dehradun, we've guided 500+ students to selection β and the pattern is always the same: a clear syllabus, smart prioritisation and disciplined test practice. Here is the complete strategy.
SSC JE exam pattern
SSC JE is held in two papers:
- Paper 1 (CBT, 200 marks): Reasoning (50) + General Awareness (50) + General EngineeringβCivil (100).
- Paper 2 (Descriptive, 300 marks): Conventional civil & structural engineering questions.
Both papers count toward the final merit, so you cannot ignore Paper 2's descriptive depth.
High-weight topics (prioritise these)
| Topic | Weight | Why |
|---|---|---|
| RCC & Steel Design | High | Most predictable, formula-driven scoring. |
| Strength of Materials (SOM) | High | Backbone of structural questions. |
| Soil Mechanics | Medium-High | Conceptual + numerical mix. |
| Surveying | Medium-High | Highly scoring with practice. |
| Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulics | Medium | Formula clarity is key. |
| Estimation & Costing | Medium | Easy marks in Paper 2. |
| Transportation & Environmental | Medium | Factual + small numericals. |
A month-by-month plan
- Months 1β4: Build concepts subject-by-subject β start with SOM, RCC and Soil Mechanics.
- Months 5β7: Finish remaining subjects + begin Paper 2 descriptive writing practice.
- Months 8β10: Full revision, 10+ years of PYQs, and weekly full-length mocks.
- Final stretch: Speed, accuracy and error-log review β no new topics.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ignoring Paper 2 until the end β descriptive answers need months of practice.
- Hoarding too many books instead of mastering one source + PYQs.
- Skipping reasoning and general awareness β they're quick, high-return marks.
